Happy Ways to Healthy Bodies Seminar Series



This 6 week seminar series is designed to help people recognize and shape healthy lifestyle habits. Weekly lunch-hour or after-work sessions include helpful handouts and discussions to reinforce positive habits. Group support increases motivation and results!

Each seminar will include:
  • Progress appraisal
  • Session topic presentation and discussion
  • Fitbreak: workplace wellness stretches to increase energy and decrease stress
  • Resources, handouts, behavior modification strategies, tracking sheets for activity and food
  • Question and answer period
  • Group support and networking


Session Topics:


Getting Started:
  • What is a healthy body composition? How is this assessed?
  • Body Mass Index (BMI) explained and done
  • Discussion of other self-assessment tools
  • Energy 1 – 2 – 3 : a simple, healthy start to better eating


Changing Habits:
  • How habits are shaped and changed
  • Assessment of personal habits that affect body composition and health
  • Techniques to change lifestyle habits for the better
  • Commitment to small, effective changes you can make


Nutrition Basics:
  • Canada’s Food Guide to Healthy Eating (handout with explanation)
  • Reading labels: the 30% fat rule; what does ‘light’ mean, anyway?…
  • Counting calories: is it necessary?
  • Tips and tricks for reducing overeating: the portion solution
  • The thermal effect of a meal: why skipping meals doesn’t make sense


The Role of Physical Activity:
  • Turn on your metabolic furnace
  • Calories in – calories out: the metabolic balance
  • Ways to include more healthy activity in your lifestyle
  • Commit to be more fit!


Body Image:
  • How comfortable are you with your shape?
  • How realistic are your expectations for change?
  • Framing your body composition in a healthy light
