AQX #3 - Body Basics teaches aqua fitness enthusiasts about bones, muscles, body systems, and training in the water.  The course offers an interesting mixture of text, interactive learning exercises and useful video clips like the one (right) showing how to stretch effectively in deep water.  There is no floor contact and no use of pool walls or railings in this suspended stretch sequence.

Stretch forces are created with core stabilization and the use of your own muscles.  This means core training is enhanced throughout the entire stretch sequence.

The sequence shown at right takes 3:45.  Hold the stretches longer when performing them at the end of an aqua fitness class.  This sequence fits comfortably into the five minutes usually used for stretching at the end of a 45 minute aqua fitness class.

Teaching Power Posture in the Pool

The following brief video demonstrates verbal and visual cueing techniques useful for aqua fitness participants. Once people learn to align and maintain ideal posture throughout  their vertical aquatic exercise session, they can achieve amazing core-training benefits that carry over outside the pool.

Power Posture in the Pool

Picture
Teaching and constantly reinforcing excellent core alignment in the pool has many benefits for participants:
  • Neck muscles carry less load when the cervical spine and head are properly positioned
  • Shoulder muscles are less tense and arms are more powerful when the shoulder blades are anchored low on the torso
  • Deep breathing is easier to do when the rib cage is lifted and the chest is 'open'
  • Core training is accomplished throughout the entire aquatic exercise session
  • Stability and balance are challenged and trained in the dynamic aquatic environment
  • Participants will experience carry-over to improve their alignment and posture on land throughout daily activities
